SUN LAKES REPUBLICAN CLUB MINUTES
When: September 11, 2024 6:30PM-8:30PM
Where: Sun Lakes Country Club #1 Navajo Room
Who: approximately 200 in attendance
AGENDA:
- Chairman Michael Tennant welcomed the guests and led us in the Invocation and the Pledge of Allegiance.
- Our first speaker was AZ State Senator JD Mesnard. He spent a long time explaining the propositions, especially prop#135. There has been controversy about this one because people mistakingly think that it is granting the governor emergency powers in a crisis that the governor doesn’t already have. He says that per the constitution the governor already has emergency powers to make decisions in a crisis, but there are no limits as to the length of time that the governor can wield these powers. So this proposition will enable the legislature to discontinue the powers after 30 days, or even sooner, by a vote of the legislature. The prop is meant to limit the governor’s powers not to enhance them. The other prop that was explained to us in more detail was prop#138 , which will protect small businesses by helping them manage costs when there are mandatory minimum wage increases. There was a time of Q&A after his talk.
- The next speaker was Aimee Yentas, VP of Policy for the Free Enterprise Club of AZ. Aimee Yentes is a native-born Arizonan who grew up in Tempe and Gilbert. She is a Graduate of Arizona State University, W.P Carey School of Business with a degree in Business Communications. Yentes has worked in a variety of professional capacities including private small business, government, and the non-profit sector. She has worked for The Arizona Free Enterprise Club since 2015 where she helps to craft and promote good public policy at the state level. Aimee was also elected to serve on the Gilbert Town Council during 2018-2022. She was invited to our club meeting to explain all the propositions on our election ballots this November. Helpful “palm cards” reflecting the ways they were advising people to vote were dispersed to all in attendance. There was a time of Q&A after her talk.
- Jeff Weninger and Julie Willoughby, who are running to fill 2 seats in the AZ State Legislature, also had a few minutes to explain the importance of voting and encouraging the club to remember to vote for BOTH of them.
- The SLRC Secretary, PK, was selling seats for the SLRC Christmas Dinner Dance.
- There were yard signs available for people to take home.
- The 50/50 raffle winner won $98 tonight!
- The speaker in October will be Mike Broomhead the talk show host from KTAR 92.3 FM our local radio station.
