When : Wednesday November 13, 2024 6:30pm-8:30pm
Where: Sun Lakes Country Club #1
Who: approximately 80 guests

AGENDA:

  1. Chairman Michael Tennant welcomed the guests and led the Pledge of Allegiance.
  2. Linda Gorman led the Invocation.
  3. Carolyn led the “Happy Birthday tribute song” for Mike’s birthday.
  4. Our first speaker was AZ State Legislator Julie Willoughby. She went over the election results for the AZ State Legislature. We gained 2 more Republicans in the House. She reminded us that the 2026 election is coming in which we get to vote for a new Governor. And we will also get to elect aa Lt. Governor for the first time. After her talk there was a time of Q&A. Most of the questions had to do with the discussion of the controversial election of the “Speaker of the House” today.
  5. Our next speaker was AZ State Senator JD Mesnard. He discussed the fact that we were still counting ballots a week after the election and that this was making AZ look ridiculous to the rest of the nation. The counting method has to be improved. He pointed out that the Republicans had swept all the County races, the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors will have a Republican majority, the Congress will have a majority in both the House and the Senate. He called Trump’s come back “epic”. Our AZ State Legislature will have 17 in the Senate a net gain of 1. After his talk there was a time of Q&A. One question was “What happens in the States where Trump has named a sitting Governor to his Cabinet?” The answer is that the Governor can appoint a replacement to serve the rest of the term until the next election. He said all the “#100” Props failed to pass except for the abortion prop 139. Chandler School Board has added one more conservative but they are still outnumbered 3 to 2. And he reported that the School Bond issue failed to pass.
  6. Our “Keynote” Speaker tonight was the Director of “The American Academy for Constitutional Education”, Attorney Shane Krauser,. Shane Krauser has had vast experience as a trial attorney and collegiate adjunct faculty where he taught criminal and constitutional law. He is a very popular and engaging speaker. Shane has spoken on constitutional issues and has educated audiences of various ages all over the U.S. He also has guided expert panels with various political figures and has appeared on radio and TV. Here are some of the points he made in his talk tonight:
    • Whatever we do in culture usually “trickles down” into politics.
    • Most politicians are not elected for their knowledge or understanding or commitment to the Constitution.
    • The Constitution is “defendable”.
    • Thomas Jefferson once said, ”I prefer dangerous freedom to peaceful slavery.” Shane proceeded to explain the logic and importance of that statement.
    • He gave us some questions to ask at Thanksgiving dinner: (1) Who wants to be left alone?, (2) Who thinks they can make better decisions for themselves than what the government can make? (3) Who thinks the government should have to follow the same rules it makes for others? (4) Who thinks they should be able to keep what they earn? He then proceeded to teach us how to make arguments that line up with our values rather than our passing emotions. He calls Republicans and/or Libertarians- “The Party of Leave Me Alone”. Ultimately , he said, if the Federal Government violates the constitution, it is the job of the State officials NOT to go along with the Feds. The 10th Amendment says the State has the right to “nullify” whatever unconstitutional laws have been made by an errant Federal government. Lastly he warned us that in choosing candidates we need to make sure we elect those who understand the importance of the “Rule of Law” and “The Constitution”.
    • Capitalism (not regulations) will set a “level ground” when it comes to legal battles in most things.
  7. The winner of the 50/50 Raffle won $38.
  8. There will be no regular meeting of the SLRC in December due to the Christmas Dinner Dance Celebration. Our next meeting is January 8, 2025!
